Effective date: November 2026
SpeedWitness records your driving speed and location so you have your own record of a trip. It is built so that this record stays on your phone. This policy explains exactly what the app handles and where it goes.
1. What the app records
While a trip records (it starts when Android detects you are driving, when your chosen car's Bluetooth connects, or when you tap Start), about once a second: the time, your position, the GPS receiver's speed measurement and its accuracy, direction, altitude, and the number of satellites, plus whether Android marked the location as simulated ("mock"). It also records when the trip started and ended, the moment you tap "I got pulled over", and the phone's battery level at the start and end (used only for the app's battery-use figure). You can add notes, the speed and location an officer said, a photo of a ticket, and speedometer photos for the calibration check.
2. Where it is kept
Only on your phone, in an encrypted database (SQLCipher, AES-256) whose key is protected by Android's secure key storage. Photos are stored encrypted too. The app's data is excluded from Android cloud backup and from phone-to-phone transfer. We have no server that receives trips, and no account system.
3. What leaves your phone
Nothing, unless you do one of these:
Export or share. When you create a report or export a file, it is handed to the app you choose in Android's share menu. Where it goes from there is up to you.
Posted speed limit lookup (optional, Pro). If you ask a report to look up posted limits and confirm the dialog, the coordinates of that stretch of road are sent from your phone to OpenStreetMap's Overpass API to find the roads' posted limits. Nothing else is sent: no name, account, device identifier or trip details. OpenStreetMap's servers are operated by third parties under their own policies (OSMF privacy policy).
Buying Pro. The purchase is handled by Google Play and RevenueCat, our purchase-processing provider, which receives the purchase record and an anonymous app user ID it creates. They never receive your trips or locations.
4. What we don't do
No advertising, no advertising ID, no analytics, no crash reporting service, no selling or sharing of data, and no speed-trap or police alerts.
5. How long it is kept
Trips are deleted automatically after the period you choose (7, 30 or 90 days), unless you lock them. Settings → Delete all data removes every trip, note, photo and calibration at once, and uninstalling the app removes everything. Your history can help you, and it could also be requested in a legal case. Keep only what you need.
6. Signed records
Each trip is signed with a key created inside your phone's secure hardware for this installation. Exported trip files contain the trip's data, the signature, the key's public part and, where the phone provides it, Android's certificate chain for the key, so anyone you give the file to can check it was not changed. The files contain a random installation ID, not your name or a device identifier.
7. Deletion requests
Everything recorded is on your phone and you can delete it there. To delete the purchase record RevenueCat holds, email developer@ali3nstudios.com with your Google Play order number.
8. Children
SpeedWitness is for drivers and is not directed to children.
9. Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with its date. Questions: developer@ali3nstudios.com.
SpeedWitness records what your phone's GPS measured. It is not legal advice and doesn't guarantee any outcome.
To check a trip file someone gave you, use the SpeedWitness verifier. It runs entirely in your browser and uploads nothing.
